C&B AGM 2014

The club AGM will take place at the Currie Rugby Club in Balerno.  They might as well have called it the Balerno Rugby Club in Currie, but ours is not to ask - only to wonder and to muse at the idiocy of it all.

The meeting will start at 7.30 pm prompt in the Malleny lounge and full internal directions (turn left at the heart; move swiftly past the bowel - you know the kind of thing) are available in the letter and notice which, if you don't already have, you will get in the next couple of days.

President Katie will do what all good presidents do in these circumstances - namely defer to the secretary whenever an embarrassing question is asked from the floor.  Personally, I have never heard a floor speak in any of my sixty years on the planet, but one of these days, I know I am going to be surprised.

Once the floor has stopped speaking, the president has deferred deferring and the secretary has finished organising, the rest of us will doubtless repair to the bar for some much-needed revival in the form of strong drink and smelling salts.  Speaking of repairing, I have never, in my sixty-odd years ever repaired a bar, though I did once walk into one.

7.30 pm.  Thursday 3 April.

Oh - and if you have any achievements that you want read out at the meeting, let Jenny know by Monday 24 March.

There you go.  Job done.

Jenny Barrs All-comers with a Win in the Final Round!

Jenny Barr, Raymond Preston, Gina Aitken and Sheena Munro Win the Lymphoy Trophy

Jenny and co had a tougher game than they perhaps expected when Robin's team turned up with Shona Watt in the head and not the bold boy himself.  He was away on dinner duty at the Haddington CC Annual Soiree (note to committee: a good idea, this, to have an annual soiree!) and a tight game ensued.

All seemed in control until some slack play allowed a score of 4 in end four, but normal order was resumed thereafter and they closed out  the game 8-4 to the food and with a healthy six ends scored against Shona's one.

Andrew Galloway was having his own travails against a rejuvenated Andrew Barr, who ran out 15-1 winners and effectively relegated the Galloway foursome to third place in the league.

John Steven, Catriona Still, Susan MacFarlane and Francis Kennedy secure second spot and the Glenbrook Quaich

John, who has had an in-and-out competition has come from under the radar to secure second spot in the league.  He had a good win in an eight-end game with Bob Barr, skipping in Susan's absence.  His five ends to Andrew Galloway's one in the final game drove the nail into Andrew's coffin.

Finally Brian and Katie played out (another!) 5-5 draw; it is amazing how many drawn games there have been in this league.

So - here is look at the final table in as close a league as we have had for many a year.  Congratulations to Jenny and co who pulled away at the end of the competition.  Congratulations also to John Steven on his "below the radar" low flight to second place and the Glenbrook Quaich.  The others can only look on in envy and rue their missed chances!

Great Day of Fun and Fellowship at the Tom Holmes

... and Betty Gibb Gets her Name on the Trophy!

One of the highlights of the Currie and Balerno year is the Tom Holmes competition and supper.   President Katie reminded us of the history and you can read all about it here.  Suffice to say that it is a proper curling competition of the old-fashioned type and is none the worse for that.  It was good to meet up with club stalwarts Jimmy Barr and Alistair Weir at the traditional curlers' supper in the ECC club rooms after the curling.

Talking of which, it was lucky for Mrs Gibb and her team that they met Mrs Copland and her team in the last game.  Mrs Copland was in a most forgiving mood and gave away three ends.  This enabled Mrs Gibb to equal Mrs MacFarlane on ends and to pip her on shots-up.

Grand day all round!

Gina struggling at the World Junior Championships

You can read all about Gina Aitken's progress here.  Currently, she is lying 7th equal on 2 wins and 4 losses.  The games have been tight though and Scotland hasn't maybe had as many rubs as they would have hoped for.

Here is the table with three rounds of play to go.

Place Country Played Won Lost
1 Russia 6 5 1
2 Canada 6 4 2
2 Korea 6 4 2
2 Switzerland 6 4 2
2 USA 6 4 2
6 Sweden 6 3 3
7 Czech Republic 6 2 4
7 Italy 6 2 4
7 Scotland 6 2 4
10 Denmark 6 0 6

Scotland plays Switzerland this afternoon, then Canada and Italy on Sunday.  To get to a play-off, Gina has to win those three games and hope that other results go her way.

Go Scotland!
