Kettle Round 7 - Kettle Complete! 19th December

Well, with the end of 2025 coming too fast, Currie and Balerno's first competition of the year, the Kettle, has come to an end.

To win the trophy for the second time in a row, all Karen Munro's team had to do was win or draw, and despite being without their named skip or their named lead, they won their game against Mike Wood's team.

On the other sheet, Kerry Clark was hoping for Karen to lose in the hopes of bunny-hopping her to the top spot, but a 4-all draw was how her game against John Steven ended, keeping her in second place. Interestingly, that game was 8 ends, both teams got 4 ends each and the game was tied 4 a-piece!

So congratulations are in order for the winners of the Kettle this year:

Karen Munro, Morna Aitken, Joe Barry and Allan MacLennan.

Taking home the Harlaw Cup this year is:

Kerry Clark, Shona Watt, Anne Anderson and Jill Gillard. Well done!

Karen's win means she is the first female skip to win the Kettle back-to-back and the first back-to-back win since Niall Gunn retained the trophy in the 2009/2010 season!

Kettle Round 6.75 and 7.50 - 12th December

We are quickly approaching the end of year and with it the end of the Kettle Competition, and what a competition it is turning out to be.

Kerry had a decisive victory over Dave which takes her into contention for the top prize! She needs to win her last game next week and she needs Karen to lose with fewer ends for the Kettle to fall into her hands. If Karen wins or draws, she wins the Kettle!

Here is the league table to have a look at...

Kettle Round 6.50 and 7.25 - 5th December

4 teams took to the ice on the 5th of December, 2 teams with their last games of the competition! Despite a valiant win by David Aitken against Karen Munro's team (skipped by his wife, Morna), David falls short of first place, finishing on 8 points. The only team that can catch Karen at the top is Kerry if she has back to back wins in her last 2 games, but even then it will be tied points so will come down to ends!

Intense finish to the competition is imminent...I for one can't wait but unfortunately I won't be able to make the last game so I will be waiting patiently for the cards to come through!

Anyway, back to the games at hand, here is the league table after the games on the 5th of December:

Kettle Round 5.25 - 14th November

Round 5 got off to a bang with 4 teams taking to the ice on the 14th of November.

Brian Fleming took on Niall Gunn and despite a strong start from Brian, a three, followed by a steal of another 3, just gave Niall the edge to take the win.

Dave Munro gave a strong, dominant performance against David Aitken, taking a 10-5 win.

Kettle Round 4.75 - 7th November

Round 4 was completed on the 7th of November, with the final 4 teams going against each other. With two of the named skips not there, it was anyone's game!

John Steven was up against Mike Wood's team, and despite a dominant start from Wood's team (skipped by Susan MacFarlane), it was John who took the win with a 1 in the last end!

Kerry Clark was up against Karen Munro, with Karen's team holding their own and claiming another win.

Kettle Round 4.25 - 31st October 🎃

On the spookiest night of the year, 4 brave teams took to the ice!

Fearsome Fleming (Skipped by Phil Barton) took on the Menacing Dave Munro. A close game which came down to the last end and was eventually won by Munro

On the other rink, Ghoulish Gunn took on Abominable Aitken (Skipped by Vicky Gumley). A good couple of ends at the start of the game for Gunn meant they were out of reach for Vicky so the win ultimately went to Gunn.

Kettle Round 3.75 - 24th October

The remaining 6 teams to compete in round 3 took to the ice on Friday. Some big scores and good curling on difficult ice, and one very close game!

Karen was very lucky, with the ice going in her favour, against Niall Gunn. A 6 in one end really took the game in one direction which made it very hard for Niall to come back from. David Aitken's team, who was skipped by Vicky, took a nice win over Mike Wood's team (skipped by his daughter Louise). The close game was Brian Fleming (skipped by Katie Wood) against Kerry Clark. Katie came back 6-0 down to draw the game 7-7 going into the last end, where Kerry finished the game with Bruce Mouat level draw right to the button to win the game.

Kettle Round 2.75 and 3.125 - 17th October

Due to the game on Thursday the 16th, it means that these games were the final games for round 2 as well as the first games of round 3, which makes it great fun trying to think about the what to call each round!

Karen had a very close game against her Dad which came down to the last end! Tricky ice meant the game was very back and forth. The other sheet saw Niall and John go head to head. A run of 4 ends at the start set the game up for John, and despite a couple of ends, the game ultimately went to John.

Kettle Round 2.5 - 16th October

This C&B game is a bit unique, being played on a Thursday. The reason behind this is that it was originally scheduled for 24th October but since most of the players were going to be away and would need subs, it was decided to rearrange for the 16th.

Although the result appears as if the game was one-sided, that was far from the case. After 6 ends the teams were level at 4-4 and during the last end Dave was lying shot with just 2 stones left to throw. Dave attempted to play another shot into the house but wrecked on a guard which left John a shot to remove Dave's lonely stone from the house, which he performed perfectly, to leave his team lying with 6 shots.

Here is the league table after this unusual game:

Kettle Round 2.1 - 10th October

Our first split night of the season took place on the 10th of October with teams numbered 1-4 playing each other. From the look of the scores, it was a good night of curling (for 2 of the teams at least!). Well done to Kerry for securing her second win of the competition already, and to Mike for securing his first.

Here is the current league table:

Kettle Round 1 - 3rd October

I hope everyone had a lovely summer and are now ready for a new season of curling!

It was great to see everyone out of the ice for the first game of season, first of our Kettle competition and the opening day for the ice rink!

4 good games were had, with most being pretty close (sorry Mike!) and it was great to catch up with everyone. We had tricky ice in our game which meant playing down one side of the ice which made for an interesting game. It was a close game and a fun one!
