Not a good night for the ex-Weirs this evening, I am sorry to report!  Catriona Still moved up to skip in Susan Kesley's absence and all was going swimmingly for her two subs, nephew Gavin Barr, Colin Campbell and regular team member Sheena Munro until the fifth end when they lost a five to Robin Copland, Barbara Wood, Donald Kennedy and substitute Tasha Aitken.  They did manage to win four ends in their game with a nice steal in the last end.

Meanwhile, on the next sheet, sister Jenny Barr, Andrew Barr, Lois Copland and Joe Barry were having a bit of a ding-dong game against Brian Fleming, Raymond Preston, Betty Gibb and substitute Laura Barr.  Brian and co must have thought they were on easy street when they took a 3 in end four, but the Barr foursome hit right back in the next end with a 3 of their own; actually - it could have been a 4.  Anyhow, it was game on with the score nicely poised at 5-4; well - for a bit anyway.  A 4 at the very next end sealed the win for Brian, who moves onto four points in the league table alongside John and Robin.

Looking good for Niall and his troops though.

Weekend Round-up

Kerry Barr skipped her team to the ladies championship final in Forfar on Sunday morning and won her final game to become the Forfar champion.  She then qualified for the semi-final of the Forfar round of the Scottish mini-tour, only to lose out narrowly to Glen Muirhead's performance squad team.  Glen went on to win the competition.

In the same competition, Tasha and Karina Aitken just failed to qualify from their tough section, but did manage to beat Murray Young and his team - including Ian Copland.  Ian and company qualified for the quarter finals and were unfortunate to lose to Glen Muirhead when their last stone "picked up" in the last six feet of its course, turning a certain victory into a hard-to-take defeat.  That's curling.

Meanwhile, down in Stranraer, Robin and Lois Copland teamed up with Trevor and Catherine Dodds in the Scottish senior mixed championships.  They won all their section games to qualify for the semi-final, where they met Kinross's Sandy Nelson.  A steal at the last end in a really competitive game ensured that they reached the final where they faced another strong Kinross team skipped by David Clydesdale.

Sadly, the wheels "came aff ra bus" in the final.  They lost a four in the first end and were always chasing the game.  On the basis that "if you are going to lose, you may as well lose by a barrowload", they managed just that!

Great fun though and the ice was running much better than it has in the past.  This bodes well for the club's run at the mixed doubles championship in December.

Meanwhile, Susan Kesley, club president Katie Wood, Jenny Barr and Fran Stretton disappeared off to Chamonix for the weekend.  Jenny writes:

"Well, we only lost one game and that was to the eventual winners, Wolfie Burpa from Germany with his brother Hans, Wolfie's daughter, Hans's son and their chum and past Brier winner, Sandy, from Canada - pretty good team really!  We had a good game with them and they acknowledged that it could have gone either way.  Wolfie represented Germany in the world championships three times in the 1980s, I believe.

Anyway, we finished up fourth and the top ladies team - a pretty good result for us, in fact the best we could do having lost a game.

Great trip; loads of laughs; little bit of wine and some dancing to Abba - perfect weekend really!"

Niall and his troops continued on their winning ways with a big win over club president Dave Munro.  For the rest of the competitors in the competition, Niall is accumulating ends at a frightening rate and will soon be in a position where he can almost afford to lose a game - and still be ahead of the chasing pack.  He has a strong rink ahead of him and even without his regular third, Shona Watt, Andrew Cargill was a more than adequate replacement in the vice-skip position.  Francis is as comfortable at second as he is at lead and Maggie Barry, the reigning world senior championship silver medallist, slotted in at lead to the manor born!

Meanwhile, John Steven played his way to a comprehensive win over Mike Wood.  After his initial stutter against Niall Gunn in the opening round, John is moving cannily up to the sharp end of the league table and will be there challenging at the end of the competition, I am sure.

Niall and Dave managed to get their eight ends played in what looks to have been a competitive game - there will have been plenty of draws played, I am sure.  A good effort that speaks to all the players being ready to play their shots when asked, decisive decision-making in the heads, a fast turnaround between ends and starting the game on time.  Good stuff.

This Friday, round three will be completed.  Robin Copland plays Susan Kesley in what should be a cracking game and Jenny Barr faces off against Brian Fleming.

Filling in the Scorecards

I wonder if I could ask a favour?

Please could you fill in the names of the skips (even if they are not playing) in the top two lines of the card and also put the competition name and (important this) the date of your game?

When it comes to the listing of the players, it would be helpful if you could put both first and second names (saves me having to check!); please also put an "S" beside any substitute in the team.

When marking your score, rather than put a "0" if you have not scored at an end, it is easier for me to count the ends if you just put a horizontal line.  Finally, please total up the two scores and put the total in the total box at the bottom of the card before reminding the two skips to sign.

It is typically up to the second player in the teams to keep the score.  We ask for two cards to be filled in: one goes to Jenny and the other comes to me so that I can update the website.
