C&B Win Coronation League

John Steven reports that C&B has won the Coronation League again.  The club has enjoyed much success in this important competition, but this season, C&B did not have it all its own way and victory was not secured until the very last game in the league.

The regular team consisted of Brian Fleming, John Steven, Dave Munro and Joe Barry.  Substitutes included Andrew Cargill, Raymond Preston and Josh Kellock.

Many congratulations to them all from the club.

C&B Success in Midlothian Province League Division Two

The Midlothian Province Leagues run throughout the season and the games are all played at the popular time of 9.30pm!  They culminate in a final when the top two teams play off against each other for the title and for promotion to league division one.  As an aside, I have never understood why a league (and the clue's kind of in the name) needs then to have a knock-out final where the team that has come second - maybe by four or five points, gets the chance to redeem themselves in the final.

Anyhow, that having been said, C&B first won the league, despite losing their first game way back in October to SIAE, so congratulations are due to the main team, consisting of John Steven, Andrew Galloway, Dave Munro and Megan Priestley and their substitutes Susan Kesley and Douglas Burns.

In the final itself, John reports that he, Andrew, Dave and Megan all played really well to secure their victory over the 37 club by a score of 8-2.  Importantly, they have won promotion to league division one.

Niall Gunn So Close in the Scottish Pairs Championship

Niall, along with Nigel Patrick competed in the Scottish Pairs Championship in Stranraer at the weekend, getting all the way to the final, before losing to Euan and Stewart Kyle.  Euan, of course, played lead in the Ross Whyte team that came so close in the recent World Junior Championships in Aberdeen.

Niall reports on the event in his own words...

Nigel Patrick and I lost the final of the Scottish Pairs Championship at the weekend.  Euan and Stewart Kyle's combined ages were certainly less than mine and probably Nigel's too!

It was a tough competition with a lot of good players on show.  We lost our first game, which didn't help, but wins over Doug Wilson, Luke Carson and Frazer Hare on the Saturday put us through to the quarter-final, where we had a good win against the defending champions, William Smith and Wallace Gilbert from Greenacres.  We celebrated that win in the bar with a game of short curling - the whole "Short Curling" event being won by Nigel!

In the semi-final, we had a relatively easy win against Scott Hamilton from Lockerbie before losing the final to the unbeaten Kyle brothers.

Thanks to Niall for his report on a great weekend in which they were all well looked after by McMillan Hotels.

Lymphoy Cup Round 6.1 (2) Result and Final League Table

Bob Barr, John Penny, Karen Munro and Graeme Maguire Secure the Glenbrook Quaich

In the second of the "Beast fae the East" re-arranged ties, Bob Barr faced off against Robin Copland.  It wasn't quite "winner take all"; Bob was two points ahead of Robin as they went into their game, so Robin had to win and win at least the same number of ends as Bob' team.  All was looking good for Robin, Betty Gibb, Josh Kellock and Susan MacFarlane; a big three in the sixth end (one of many threes and fours that the two teams were chucking in each other's direction!) secured their fourth end.  All they had to do was keep it clean and restrict Bob to an end score of less than four.

Ehmm.

So anyhow, Bob and co scored the four they needed for the draw and, more importantly, the point they needed to secure the Glenbrook Quaich.

Lymphoy Cup Round 7 Results and League Table

All four games went ahead this evening and it is testament to the closeness of the run-in for the Glenbrook Trophy that three of the four still had  a bearing on the destination of the trophy.

Brian Fleming had to beat Shona Watt and hope that both Bob Barr and Robin Copland slipped up.  Well Brian, Maggie Barry, Donald Kennedy and substitute Ian Keron did their bit, but sadly for them, neither Bob nor Robin did the banana skin thing, so the best they can hope for (with Niall Gunn, of course) is third place.

Robin, Betty Gibb, Susan MacFarlane and substitute Holly Davis won a titanic struggle against Jenny Barr with a valuable steal of two in their last end.  This keeps them (with Josh Kellock) very much in the hunt.

Bob Barr, John Penny, Karen Munro and Graeme Maguire had a great win against Andrew Galloway to move them onto ten points and within touching distance of the trophy.

There is one game remaining in the league and that will take place tomorrow morning at 9.30.  The game is between Bob Barr in second place and Robin Copland, currently in fourth.

Here's the results grid.

And now the league table.

So here's the story.  Bob just needs to win or draw.  He wins the Glenbrook Trophy.  If Robin wins and manages to match or beat Bob's ends total, then, he wins the trophy on 10 points and ends won.  Bob could lose the game and still win the Glenbrook trophy if he manages to score two more ends than Robin.  If he loses the game and wins four ends to Robin's three, for example, then it would go to shots-up.  Currently Bob is 16 shots up to Robin's 14.  Do the maths yourself because my brain hurts!

More tomorrow!
