Kettle Round 6.1

My work Christmas party prevented me from playing on Friday and after speaking to my third, Josh, the following day, the less said about the game the better!

On the other sheet, Niall's team, short a player, took on Kerry's team and although they fought a brave fight, the night was Kerry's.

Kettle Round 5.2

On the 6th of December, it was the turn of the other 4 teams to complete Round 5. From the looks of the scorecards, it was an interesting night!

John Steven was up against Niall Gunn and an eight end back and forth ended with John winning by 1 point!

On the other sheet, Kerry was up against Brian. Kerry took an early lead with and 2 and a 1, then Brian's team (skipped by Vicky) got their only score of a 2 in the 3rd end. Kerry then took more ones and twos to win the game.

Both sheets managed to get 8 ends in which is pretty impressive and will add to each of their end counts for the chance of a prize at the end of the season for most ends played!

Kettle Round 5.1

On the 29th of November, the first 4 teams of Round 5 took to the ice, Jenny Barr hoping to get her first win and Karen Munro (i.e., me!) hoping to keep her top spot on the league table.

I had a great first end, somehow managing to get a 4. It was getting a little closer until the 5th end when my team and I got another 4 and then the final end was the final nail with my team taking a 5.

On the other sheet, Jenny started the scoring with a 1 but a 4 followed by a 2 from Shona Watt's team made it difficult to come back from.

Kettle Round 4.2

It was the turn of the other 4 teams (the bottom 4 according to the draw, not according to the league table!) to take to the ice.

2 very high scoring games, with the 2 unlucky teams missing their skips. My game against Kerry Clarks rink was much closer than the score card read, with only a couple of large ends being the downfall.

Anyway, here is the league table after the completion of Round 4!

Kettle Round 4.1

Another split evening with teams one to four (Wood, Barr, Fleming and Steven) taking to the ice.

In what is becoming a tight race at the top, Katie and Brian went head to head with Brian taking an early lead with a 4 in the first end. It proved too difficult for Katie to come back and despite taking it to 8 ends, the game ended 8 - 4. On the other sheet (and the other end of the league table), Jenny went up against John. Unfortunately for Jenny, she wasn't able to get her first win despite a late come back attempt.

Currie and Balerno Doubles Competition 2024

C&B had their annual doubles competition on the 3rd of November. It was a great turn out 16 pairs taking to the ice in 2 sections, 8 in each.

One section (unfortunately my section) had very close games with few big ends being taken. The other section however had some very high scoring games and the eventual winners and runner ups were in that section.

Fun day was had by all and our eventual winners were:

Vicky and Lois - With a score of +13

Runners up were:

Kerry and Susan - With a score of +8

Great day for the ladies! Thank you to all who played and to all the subs that stepped in too.

Kettle Round 3

Another great night with all teams out on the ice and from the looks of the scores, some really good games! I certainly had a very close game against Brian, ending in a draw of 8 all. It was a mistake by me in the last end that gave up the win and that last end will live in my memory forever.

Over on the other sheets, Niall and Jenny were having a fairly close game until some large ends allowed Niall to take the lead. Sarah was skipping Katie's rink against Kerry. A very close game but an excellent hit by Sarah in the 2nd end gave her team a 4 and Kerry tried her hardest to make a come back but unfortunately it was not to be. John and Shona also had a close game but a 5 from John in the 3rd end made it difficult for Shona to stage her come back and John took the win.

Kettle Round 2

It was great to see all teams out on Friday, and it was also fantastic to see so many subs playing as well! Some big scoring games although my game against Niall was a lot closer than maybe either of us wanted it to be, coming down to the very last stone (an excellent last stone from Lois saved my skin!)

Although it is still early in the season and it could all change, there are a few teams pulling away at the top.

Kettle Round 1.2

The second half of the 1st round was played tonight (18th Oct) with the other 4 teams taking to the ice for the 1st time! It was Team Jenny Barr vs Kerry Clark and Katie Wood vs Niall Gunn.

Again, two high-scoring games with one being slightly closer than the other...

Kettle Round 1.1

It was great to see C&B back out on the ice for the start of the 24/25 season. Testing ice plagued both rinks with Karen and Brian's teams coming out on top. Brian had a much closer with a 2 in the last end giving him the win.

Tom Holmes Trophy 2024

On the 16th of March, Currie and Balerno came in their masses to Murrayfield to compete in the Tom Holmes trophy. This is a favourite competition within the club due to the unique make up of the teams. Once you have won the trophy as skip, you are no longer able to. This means that teams are helmed by people who wouldn't normally get the chance to (or usually don't want to) skip. As it's only 3 2-end games, the pressure is completely off and the whole afternoon is good fun all around.

Winning this year was Josh Kellock's team of Josh, Jenny, Morag and myself (which I was thrilled by considering I won it last year! And I was subbing for my Mum.)

The day before was also my 30th birthday and fellow Ides of March twin John Steven who was 60 and the club surprised us with a delicious cake.

Following on from a delicious meal from Parsley and Thyme catering, the main competition of the night went underway...the bottle sliding! A bottle of Highland Park (kindly donated by Donald Kennedy) and a bottle of Champagne (kindly donated by Betty Gibb) were the prizes. Colin Barr won the whisky and Jennifer Marshall won the champagne. £110 was raised in total, which will greatly help the clubs funds.

Lymphoy Cup '24 Final Round Results

This years Lymphoy, like many Currie and Balerno competitions, was a very close-fought one, with the whole competition coming down to the last game. Subbing for Michael Wood in Kerry Clark's team, I thoroughly enjoyed my game, although as I usually play skip, the amount of sweeping was almost deadly! From my vantage point on sheet 7, I was able to have a look over all the games being played. Some big ends were exchanged, 4s, a 5 and even a 6 (which surprisingly John was happy with as Andrew G was playing his last shot for an 8 but wrecked on a guard!). The main game of the night was Megan Priestley's team vs Niall Gunn's team. It was all square till the 3rd end then a series of 1s followed by a 3 allowed Niall's team to jump to the top spot and take the Lymphoy Cup. Megan's team, skipped amazingly by Jen Marshall take the Glenbrook Quaich.

Winners of the Lymphoy Cup:

Niall Gunn

Rowena Steven

Morna Aitken

Stuart Ronald

Winners of the Glenbrook Quaich (runners up):

Jennifer Marshall

Lois Copland

Graham Paterson

Lymphoy Cup '24 Round 6.1 Results

Four teams were out yesterday, although not much of a contest for top spots, exciting games nonetheless! Kerry's team took Dave's team's chances of the top spot away completely with an outstanding win while Dave was out celebrating my birthday (I can only apologise to my Dad's team! I had a lovely night.) No change to the table, so Dave is still in contention for runner-up, so long as Niall loses in his last game.

Lymphoy Cup '24 Round 5.2 Results

Well, what a way to celebrate International Women's Day with victories from all our female skips! Some of them quite convincingly too! With wins by Kerry and Jenny's teams, it now means no teams are sitting on 0 points, with all teams securing at least one win! Dave's team were in a great spot at the top, having played and beaten all teams at the top of the table and had 2 games in hand, but having been beaten by Jenny, his chances of a trophy are slipping slightly. It'll be interesting to see what happens next...As for the top of the table, Megan Priestly's team are sitting nicely at the top, although with the same ends as Niall Gunn's team, it'll come down to the last game of the season.

Lymphoy Cup '24 Round 5.1 Results

Two interesting games happened last night! Megan Priestly's team took on Brian Fleming's team, and with Megan holding top spot and Brian being much further down, Megan needed the win to continue her run and stay put at the top but the game ended in a draw. Dave Munro on the other hand, still with a game in hand, managed a good win against Niall Gunn which puts him in second spot on the table. With 3 more games for him to play, while the other top teams only have 2, it's going to be an interesting finish to the season!

C&B Points 2024

C&B had their annual points competition on the 19th of Jan, with a decent turnout of 12 players, with a real mix of usual players and newer members of the club.

They managed to work their way through 7 disciplines. It was very close at the top with 4 players scoring in the 30s! But taking the top spot was Jen Marshall with a score of 35, narrowly beating Dave Munro who finished with 34 points (and wouldn't stop going on about a missed stone on the last discipline...It's alright, he never reads this blog anyway). So Jen wins not just the Points trophy, but also the ladies' prize too!

Coming in 3rd with a respectable score of 33 was Eilidh Troup, a new member to the club and to the points game too! I think Jen should be worried about that trophy next year!

Well done everyone! Points is great fun and a great way to improve your curling so if you are reading this and haven't tried it before, it's definitely worth trying out next season. After all, it was C&B who created it!

Lymphoy Cup '24 Round 4.2 Results

 Hello Everyone,

On the Round 3.1 post I said that this would be called round 3.2, but after having to alter as I had missed a game, this post is called 4.2 which is more in keeping with the current league table (Despite there being 2 teams that have played 5 games, and 2 that have only played 3 games).

Here is the league table anyway! (Its getting a little confusing I know!):

League Table
Megan Priestly's team still lead the way with a game in hand too, but 2 wins from Dave Munro's team will definitely throw a spanner in there too! Still very much all to play for!

Lymphoy '24 Round 3.1 Results

Two high-scoring games on Friday have thrown the whole competition wide open! Team Priestly and Team Galloway had good wins which pushed them to the top of the table, and team Galloway has another game next week which could push them to the top...but then with a break, there are several teams who could find themselves in the top position.

*Please note, I have named this update '3.1' but with the next few weeks jumping about here and there, I will be numbering as I usually do, to keep me right! So next week will be numbered '3.2' despite the fact it is 4.1 for some teams and 3.2 for others*

Lymphoy '24 Round 2.2 Results

Two very close games took place last Friday, with team Munro taking on team Steven and team Fleming taking on team Galloway. Both games were only won by 1 point, with Munro vs Steven only exchanging 1s throughout the game. Very close! Not necessarily because teams were playing well (I was subbing and I'm surprised John didn't sack me after the first end!)

Lymphoy Teams and Draw 2024

Hello Everyone,

And just like that we are into a new year and a new competition, the Lymphoy Cup. As before, here are the teams for this half of the season:

Happy curling everyone! Also, I am labelling all the competitions now (I started with the Kettle from this year) so on the website you'll be able to find posts for specific competitions a little easier. I can only do this from now on not on historical pieces unfortunately but hopefully it helps someone.

Kettle Round 7 - Final Results!

Well, well, well. What a final few games that was to finish the first half of the season, bringing the Kettle competition 23/24 to a close.

Played in January rather than the Kettle finishing before Christmas due to the late start to the season, I think the wait just added to the tension!

It was a close run competition towards the end, with 3 out of the 4 games mattering. 2 of the leaders, John Steven and Katie Wood were up against each other. Unfortunately, Katie wasn't able to play, and although her rink fought valiantly, John Steven came out on top. On other rinks, Karen Munro needed a win against Shona Watt to remain in contention for a trophy, but unfortunately, a peel was all she could manage. Brian Fleming was up against Dave Munro, who wasn't in with a chance of the win (sorry Dad!). Brian narrowly won, probably due to Dave focussing more on socialising with the Strathcona lot. So with 2 teams on 10 points, it came down to ends, and with a peel in ends, it was John's 20 shots up against Brian's 7 that clinched the victory.

So the winning team of the Kettle Trophy 23/24 was:

John Steven

Jenny Barr

Sarah Ford

Sheena Munro (Mum/see Dad, its important to have a focussed skip!)

Winners of the Harlaw Cup (Runners up)

Brian Fleming

Andrew Galloway

Lois Copland

Donald Kennedy
