Henderson Bishop Champions!

News just in from Budapest...

Actually - not strictly true; the competition was in Kelso, but serious congratulations to our Henderson Bishop champions, Jenny Barr, Susan Kesley, Fran Stretton and Morna Aitken.  More on this story later but suffice to say for the moment - I am in awe; what a fabulous achievement!

Positive Performance by Team Aitken at the Scottish Ladies

Alas and alack - it was not to be!  Team Aitken lost out in their semi-final match against eventual runners-up, team Fleming, but Gina and her team should take enormous positives from the week that they have enjoyed in Perth.  The highlight (looking in from the outside) was their magnificent win over Eve Muirhead's Olympic Bronze Medalists and eventual champions.

Key for me was the experience of playing top-quality opposition on arena ice in a championship format.  The experience will be invaluable for them when they become Team Scotland at the World Junior Ladies Championships from 28 February to 8 March in Tallin, Estonia.

A lot of people who know the game well told me that they were hugely impressed by team Aitken's performance throughout the week.  They had presence on the ice; they were scared of no-one; they all throw the stone really well and, of course, they have the experience of last year to fall back on as well.

This year's World Junior Championship looks to be an open one, so roll on Tallinn and the very best of luck to coach David Aitken, Gina and her team.

Congratulations to Gina Aitken!

With the Scottish Ladies Junior Championship already in the Aitken trophy cabinet, Gina is going all out for the double!  She and her team of Naomi Brown, Rowena Kerr and Rachel Hannen have qualified in third place for the Scottish Ladies Championships play-offs.

As far as I can understand, there will be a play-off on Saturday morning between the Olympic Bronze Medalist team, skipped by Eve Muirhead, who qualified in first place and the second qualifier team skipped by Hannah Fleming.  The winner of that game goes straight to the final and the loser drops down to play Gina and her team in the semi-final at 7.00 pm.  The winner of that game qualifies for the final on Sunday.

A fantastic achievement to get so far and Currie and Balerno CC is still in the running to have a Scottish Ladies Champion two years in a row!

Henderson Bishop Finals in Kelso

Remember this picture?

Seems like an age ago now, but back in December two Currie and Balerno teams qualified for the Henderson Bishop finals taking place this week coming in Kelso.  They find themselves in the same section together with Lockerbie, Dumfries and Waterfront.  Their first games are at 1.00 pm on Monday.

The winners of each of four sections qualify for the high road semi-finals on Thursday at 10.00 am and the runners-up in the sections qualify for the low road semis at the same time.  Both finals are at 1.30 pm.

Good luck to both teams and have a great week!

Lymphoy Trophy Round Five Results and League Table

Some tight, tight games this evening with lots of shouting and excitement on show and a full turnout on the ice.  Here are the results.

Team 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
F A E F A E F A E F A E F A E F A E F A E F A E
Barr J       10 5 4 3 9 2 3 7 3 4 5 4             5 4 4
Wood K 5 10 3       7 6 5 6 4 4       4 10 2 5 8 5
Steven 9 3 5 6 7 3       11 2 6       6 4 4 13 5 4
Copland 7 3 5 4 6 4 2 11 2       5 5 4             5 5 3

Wood M       8 5 3 5 13 3       3 6 2 7 6 3       4 11 1
Galloway 4 5 3             5 5 3 2 11 2 2 7 2 11 4 5

Regulars Brian Fleming and Andrew Cargill were joined by Kerry Barr and Richie Anderson and found themselves pitted against Robin Copland, Betty Gibb and substitutes Graeme Maguire and Kirsty Barr.  Some great shots from both teams and the Fleming team dropped their first point with a draw.  That said, Brian has guaranteed himself silverware; whether it is the Lymphoy trophy itself or the Glenbrook Quaich will depend on his two remaining games against Shona Watt and his main challenger, John Steven.

Talking of John, he had a tousy tussle against Dave Munro, skipping in Shona Watt's absence.  John ended up winning this one 6-4 and managed to win four ends to boot.

Andrew Galloway lost a tight one 4-5 to Jenny Barr and the Wood siblings managed to get eight ends in with Mike only winning three but scoring well in the ones he won!  8-5 the final score, but Katie scored five ends.

So. Let's look at the league table.

Position Team Played Ends Shots U/D Shots Points
1 Fleming 5 19 14 33 9
2 Steven 5 22 24 45 8
3 Watt 5 20 7 32 4
4 Wood K 5 19 -11 27 4
5 Copland 5 18 -7 23 4
6 Barr J 5 17 -5 25 4
7 Wood M 5 12 -14 27 4
8 Galloway 5 15 -8 24 3

Good grief!  As I said earlier, Brian is guaranteed silverware - congratulations to him, Andrew Cargill, Anne Anderson and Simon Kesley.  John Steven is almost there as well if we are being brutally honest, though he is still, in theory, catchable - more of that later.  Shona Watt, Katie Wood, Robin Copland and Jenny Barr are separated by three ends.  Although Mike is also on four points, his twelve ends make life difficult for him.

Andrew Galloway, Lois Copland, Raymond Preston and Francis Kennedy.  Three points:  goosed!  But astonishingly, they could still come third.

Lymphoy Cup Round Four (2) Results and League Table

The second half of round four was completed on Friday night 14 February, so we are now just over half way through the competition with three rounds to go.  With John Steven losing last week, the pressure was on Brian Fleming to deliver a win and move himself to the top of the table.  Well, that's what he did.  Andrew Galloway was unable to make the game, so Lois Copland stepped up to the plate, with Raymond Preston (moving up to third) and Frances Kennedy each throwing three stones.

Here are the results.

Team 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
F A E F A E F A E F A E F A E F A E F A E F A E

Galloway                   5 5 3 2 11 2 2 7 2 11 4 5

In the other game, Mike Wood secured his first points in the competition with a closely-fought win over Shona Watt's team.  Shona secured four ends to Mike's three.  The league table now looks like this.
